Michael Heumann's 2003 album The Island of Sleeping Chickens is now available at eMusic, Amazon.com, and iTunes. Here's the new liner note blurb:
Imagine that chickens are not the small, utterly common, utterly mundane creatures we all know and eat. Imagine instead that they are creatures living alone, on their own island, far away from all us humans. Now imagine that California-based electronic artist Michael Heumann has visited this island (don't worry, he was invited) and taken some field recordings of their natural habitat. Imagine that! |

Copyright © 2000 Haunted Ink Records AC is a 24-track, 48 minute long CD inspired by a work-in-progress novel I've been working on for a few years. The novel deals with a future, post-ecological disaster world where most people live underground, in mountains. In order to stay sane, various devices have been invented to simulate the sounds, smells, and tastes of the (now dead) natural world. Hence, everyone lives in pitch-dark caves, but no one cares because AC (sort of a transformed notion of air conditioning, where it doesn't simply cool the air but conditions it to suit a person's particular taste) and earwigs (inplants that reprogram sensory information to emulate anything one can desire) act as perfectly acceptable substitutes. That's the novel's main idea, at any rate. Unfortunately, since I've been writing so many other things for so many other places, I haven't had much of a chance to work on this novel. Hence, right now, this CD is about as close as I'll get to exploring some of the ideas I put together for this novel. The track "Sound+Weight+Smell" is available free to download and enjoy. Copyright © 1999 Haunted Ink Records One day I met a box, and the box talked to me. It told me to push buttons, but when I did nothing happened. "Push another button and it'll all make sense," it said. So I pushed another button and the box disappeared. I was all alone in a field of radishes. It was sunny and warm. I was wearing a Butthole Surfers t-shirt. I didn't know what to do, so I waited. Eventually a bunny hopped up to me and said, "You're too late. The box is finished." When the bunny left, I started walking back the way I came. I never heard from the box again. Track Listing
